The Demu file archives are maintained at the following locations:
The Internet Archive – Classic PC Games Collection: Over 4,000 demos, freeware, and shareware games primarily for DOS and Windows 3.1/95. The entire collection is over 52 GB’s of gaming goodness.
YouTube Channel: Just over 300 videos of classic gameplay, and game trailers.
Picasa Web Album: Almost 200 vintage images sorted into categories.
Major updates to the collections will be announced here, however, normal weekly updates will not get mentioned. I recommend subscribing to each archive you are interested in following at their respective sites.
Can you believe we made the transition to using The Internet Archive as our primary file hosting back in September 2012 and this is the first update here? It seems like it was just last week that I was pretending to be programmer with file repository software in vain.
Don’t let the lack of updates here fool you though – since then I have added over 460 QBasic games, plus of course countless DOS and Windows games to the collection. There are even new videos on YouTube from a QuickTime CD (featuring videos from the QuickTime Film Festival in 1994) – my favorite was Cool Cola.
Unfortunately, during that time the “Software Archive” was demoted at The Internet Archive. It makes sense really – if you look at the numbers of downloads in each collection the software archive appears to get far less use than books, movies, or music. Logically the most popular collections are what will be given “top placement” in the headers and search fields. This does mean it can be difficult sometimes to search for a specific item in the collection because you can’t simply select “software” or “classic pc games” in the search drop down on their site. As a manual work around you can put (collection:classicpcgames) in the search box with your search term afterwards to only search our collection.
This also means subject/keyword, creator, and year fields are much more important. If you have any suggestions on additions I can make to the subject/keyword field or other metadata in the collection to make it more valuable please let me know.
Welcome to the new Demu. I haven’t used WordPress in at least 4 years so I’m trying to get back into the hang of this. I’m also trying to figure out what the best way is to tie our file archive, YouTube channel, and Picasa albums together here. I’m hoping to have everything ironed out over the coming day and then begin to get back into the content creation.
All of our files (with few exceptions I need to iron out) are now available on archive.org. I have a lot of ideas which I am excited to try out with the new format. If you have comments or suggestions feel free to drop me an e-mail at email@example.com
